Obesity is a chronic, relapsing, and treatable condition affecting millions and is a significant risk factor for chronic diseases. As primary care providers, understanding the nuances of obesity management is crucial. This session will provide practical, evidence-based strategies for prescribing medications in obesity treatment, tailored specifically for the primary care setting. Objectives: By the end of this session, participants will be able to: 1. Identify appropriate candidates for pharmacotherapy in obesity management. 2. Understand the mechanisms of action, benefits, and side effects of FDA approved anti-obesity medications (AOMs). 3. Develop personalized prescribing strategies that align with patients' health goals and comorbidities. 4. Discuss behavioral and lifestyle interventions to complement pharmacotherapy. 5. Address common challenges and barriers in prescribing AOMs such as insurance coverage and medication shortages.
With 7 years of experience in bariatric surgery and 3 years in obesity medicine, I have developed expertise in managing obesity and its related conditions. I have actively contributed to the field through national webinars hosted by Cleveland Clinic, as well as speaking at ASMBS state chapter meetings.
